When the "mother-lode" of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha was located on July 20,1985, divers were astounded to see concreted chests of coins still encased in the wooden boxes in which they were shipped. When cleaned, these coins represented all of the New World mints, with the mint at Potosi being the most predominant.

These coins are clearly struck on the obverse and reverse sides, with the crest of the reigning Spanish king centered on the obverse. Mint mark assayer and denomination are often all visible. The reverse or cross side should be equally clear with lions and castles readily visible.

Similar to grade 1, with features on the coin not quite so clear. In some cases this is due to carelessness when they were hand struck over 377 years ago; in others the action of the sea has caused minor corrosion.
